active in many lines judge john F chidester after an illness lasting several months lied died at his residence this city at 3 this morning his condition had been very serious and was considered hopeless for the past month I 1 his I 1 is family were summoned to his bedside veste yesterday iday and the judge gradually sank into unconsciousness during thedac the day from which state he did not recover in the passing of judge Clil chidester dester this community and the state of U utah tall loses one of their most active citi I 1 zens he was a man of sterling qualities broad and with a broad view of life As a friend he was true and faithful and as a judicial officer lie he tempered justice with mercy As head of the juvenile court in this district the wayward boy found in him a kind hind fatherly advisor and many a boy who made a slip in life had judge chidester idester Cb to thank for planting his feet firmly on the upward path and giving a helping hand to keep him straight he was of a big jovial kindly hearty disposition and even his enemies in les were met with kindness and pleasing indulgence in the heat of contest the judge never lost his good nature and this was one of his biggest assets in making friends and keeping them A better social spirit would would be hard to find he was stead fast of purpose and when he had determined ter mined on oil a certain line to be pursued lie he kept that line until the objective was reached or he was defeated in his purpose he was charitable and no one in distress ever appealed to him in vain he did not display his charities from the housetops but many people in straightened circumstances will remember the many kindly acts of judge chidester laboring under a handicap of being reared in the country and at a time when educational advantages were scarce lie he yet climbed to heights and attainments that few with great scholastic equipment could reach his career is a marvel of persever ence and pluck ile he has held some of the most eminent offices in the state and has always filled them with credit and performed his bis duties with honor john foy chidester Chi doster was the son of john P chidester idester Cli succeed himself and held the office of judge for ten years during which time he sat as trial judge in many important cases and it may be said that he was a credit to the judiciary of the state he became a candidate for the congressional nomination in 1911 and barely missed landing it he was appointed a member of the state land board in 1912 and served tour four years in all his official positions he was painstaking and efficient and lie he gave his best energies to his work in an ecclesiastical way lie he was active for his bis church ile he served in the mission field in the
