reaper is in receipt of a circular letter from the taxpayers league of cache county which isone bisone of the best things that has blown into this office in many moons A perusal by our readers of the text matter embodied in the general shake up of conditions in utah ought to prove a tonic to every taxpayer who knows quite well that state revenues and state money are being spent recklessly by state officials and that the harples harpies who fatten at the public crib need a jar similar to the one that is being given by the cache county body of taxpayers the resolutions adopted and put into circulation as well as tile the long list of state officials many of whom merely hold a sinecure will repay careful reading and we believe that the sagacious farmers of the sevier valley will unite with the cache county enthusiasts in demanding that the whole subject he be looked into and made the cause for retrenchment in tile the interest of all the taxpayers of the state the resolutions sent out by the taxpayers league are comprehensive and in detail they read as follows 1 we declare tor for the election or of the state board of Equall equalization zat I 1 on by direct vote of the people one member from each judicial district of the state of utah 2 we hold that the office of district attorney superfluous and constitutes utes an unnecessary expense upon the state and we therefore favor the abolishment of the said office and the enactment of a law providing that the county attorneys tor for the various counties perform the labors and duties now performed by the several district attorneys 3 we declare that the taxes of the state of utah are excessive and to the end that the peoples burdens may be lightened we favor amendments of existing statutes and the passing of laws providing tor for a the abolishment of the offices of secretary of the juvenile court commission and chief probation officer in each juvenile district of the state b the consolidation of such offices as hotel IiI inspector labor inspector dairy and food inspector live stock inspector sheep inspector and a great many other offices and commissions and inspectors which are now appointed by the Co governor vernor and paid out of the taxes of the state c we favor the abolishment of a great many unnecessary commissions and inspectors which are now appointed by the governor and paid out of the taxes of the state 4 we hold that the contingent lex benses of the state and county officers are excessive and we favor legislation to reduce such expenses to the lowest possible minimum minu mum and i that the salary of tile the governor be reduced from to per annum the salary of secretary of state slate from to the salary ot tic th state auditor from to the salary of attorney general from to 1 the salary of each of tile tho twelve district judges from to each and the salary of the three justices of the supreme court from to each i i 5 we favor tile the passage passage of a law providing for the appointment and election of a commission to be composed of the secretary 0 of state the stated auditor and three taxpaying 1 1 citizens of 0 the state whose duties shall be to prepare a budget of the proposed expenditures of the state and to present the he same to the legislature r with proper recommendations 1 it shall be a further duty of the comi commission hission to investigate all requisitions claims and requests for appropriations riat ions and to determine the necessity and to curtail and limit the said requisitions within the least amounts possible consistent with efficient service and results 6 it appears to the members of the league that the present fish and game law is extremely deficient and we therefore favor the abolishment or of the fish and game commissioner together with all his deputies and assistants and recommend that tile the work now being done by said officers be performed in the future by the county sheriff and the constables of the various precincts 7 we declare for the curtailment of expenses in the matter of our public schools we are employing too m lany i ny t teaches a an dd d spending bending an ail unreasonable amount of our taxes for school purposes we believe that economy can be practiced in this department part ment without sacrificing efficiency 8 we favor retrenchment in the expenditures and manipulation of county affairs by the board of county commissioners of this county and we hold that too many deputies are employed in a number of the offices in the county thus leaving the principals of the said offices without work and tree free to vacate their offices a good part of the time we disapprove of inequitable and inefficient assessment of property in this county and declare for an equitable adjustment of assessment and taxation especially looking to the reduction of taxes on small farms and small homes 10 we hold that the board of county commissioners should exercise a more careful and painstaking supervision of the county offices and ofil officers cers under their jurisdiction with a view to curtailing unnecessary expenses and procuring the most efficient service possible for the public 11 we condemn tile tho action of the board of county commissioners in increasing their own salaries and we request them as a board to reduce the salaries recently fixed by their board to per annum for each commissioner and that the county commissioners live within the law in the matter of expenses 12 wo we request each and every candidate elected for office in this county no matter what political party
