Show OBSERVES BEAL LABOR DAY ground broken for a municipal swimming pool and every body works but father the term labor day has little bearing in any of the rural districts of utah still it is a holiday and if there is anything 6 that the average resident of a cow town appreciates it is a day off froni from work and the opportunity to celebrate something or another labor day is a very notable holiday in the larger cities where there are manufacturing industries dus tries and were there are big pay rolls and thousands of skilled mechanics employed it is the one big day of the year with organized laborers and they observe it with pomp and ceremony red fire blue lights and as is of often ten the case with undue rioting and unseemly conduct but labor day has no significance in an agricultural community like richfield and the term is little more than a travesty last monday was labor day throughout the length and breadth of the land and richfield to be in the swim observed it in a good sensible way it was made the date for dedicating the site of the new swimming pool in the northwest part of the city and the exercises pertaining thereto had been well advertised locally flags were unfurled to the breeze the brass band paraded the streets and a stranger might have imagined that richfield was a manufacturing metropolis supporting an army of industrial workers and the headquarters of a payroll pay roll a mile amile in in length at an early hour in the morning the band played patriotic selections on the city square later automobiles and other vehicles began to assemble on main street there was no parade but there was a general exodus of citizens to the vicinity of the city spring the site of the proposed pool they carried with them grubbing hoes spades and other implements of labor and ere 9 all were busily engaged in removing sagebrush and weeds leveling the grounds and performing ming other work deemed necessary by the supervisor of the occasion there was no particular program of exercises in connection with the momentous affair all were too busily engaged in manual exercise to listen to any speechmaking speech making or oratorical efforts and perspiration was one of the leading features judge erickson however made a few timely remarks speaking of the need and importance of a bathing pool and commending the efforts being put forth hon W H delivered the invocation and dedicated the grounds atthe at the noon hour luncheon was served on the grounds by the home economics ladies and it was en enjoyed i oyed and appreciated by the little army of laborers who had donated their services for the day it was a memorable occasion ion and the splendid work accomplished calls for unstinted praise during the day much work was done with cheer fullness by the band of local industrials monday evening a great improvement in the appearance pe arance of the site was noticeable it was put into shape to begin the real construction of the pool this latter is to be of concrete its dimensions men will be feet and the depth of the pool will vary from 2 to 4 feet the grounds will be suitably enclosed by fence and a number of bath houses will be erect ed on the north side equipped with sanitary devices shower ing rooms etc the cement work is now under way and the pool and buildings will be rushed to completion and made ready for use within a comparatively short tinie time labor day was really and actually observed veI in richfield last Monday the alist time in the history of the city that the term labor day ever had any real significance perhaps next year another program of 0 similar nature can be arranged to fit the occasion |
