Show Too Much Prosperity If recent reports are to be believed, Germany may suffer from the fact that she is too prosperous. This paradoxical para-doxical situation is explained thus; Representatives of the Allied pawers will shortly meet to consider the fixing of the total amount of reparations which Germany shall pay on account of damage wrought by her during the World War. Naturally, Germany wants this amount placed as low as possible, while her recent adversaries want as much as Germany is able to pay. Now, the recent report by Seymour Parker Gilbert, agent-general for reputations, rep-utations, who has charge of repaia-tion repaia-tion payments, indicates that the economic conditions in Germany are much better than had been expected If this is true, it is thought that the Allies will demand a greater amount in reparations than would have been demanded had Germany's condition been less favorabl. There is no doubt that the rapidity of Germany's recovery since the war had been almost phenomenal, as the traty which deprived her of a large army or navy also enabled her to save vast sums which would have been . spent on these establishments otherwise. other-wise. However, regardless of what the exact ex-act conditions may be, it is hoped that the vexingj question of reparations may , soon be settled once for all, so that this j source of future riscord may be elimin-j elimin-j ated in the interest of continued peace. |
