Show Labor Day On the first Monday in September in each year the hosts of labor celebrate cele-brate their annual holiday dedeicated to , those who toil. While primarily a day of parades and exercises by organized labor the festivities are participated in largely by the general public and business busi-ness is usually suspended to a considerable consider-able extent. Labor Day was first recognized by Congress in 1894 when an act was passed pass-ed making it a holiday for the District of Columbia and for all Federal establishments es-tablishments throughout the United States. Prior to that time it had been made a legal holiday in 27 states and one territory, and it is now so recoeriized in all states except Alabama and Wyo ming, and even in these it is celebrated quite generally. The. day is also observed ob-served in Canada. One of the encouraging signs of the times is the better relations between capital and labor which have been developed de-veloped during the past few years. These two great forces in our national life are coming more and more to realize real-ize that the interests of both are better promoted through cooperation than through antagonism. American labor is the most productive produc-tive in the world, as well as the best paid and best protected. Employers and the public have learned that prosperity pros-perity for the workman contributes to .the prosperity of all. The high achieve ments of those who perform the nations everyday tasks are fittingly commemorated commem-orated on Labor Day. |
