Show Analyzing Crime On September 1, the first governmental govern-mental bureau for the compilation of statistics on law violations began be-gan to function. The bureau, according to the Department of Justice, does not represent a new idea. It has long been advocated and has been tried in a smaller way by various po'ice a isociations, but with little success due to lack of cooperation between states. Its operation by the Fed-tral Fed-tral government will make it possible pos-sible to analyze crime statistics in this country and throughout the w orld. Such a bureau may prove to be Cl inestimable value in the fight against crime. In the past we have gone blindly forward without sufficient knowledge on which to base conclusions. It is generally recognized that scientific knowledge is necessary to society if it is to achieve the utmost in efficiency in apprehending and punishing criminals. crim-inals. Perhaps the greatest obstacle in the path of crime suppression has been the crime reformers themselves themselv-es with their incessant efforts to burden the American people with more restrictive laws.
