Show Future Farm Prosperity Almost every American farmer is wondering when "good times" will come back. We want prosperity, pros-perity, and, what Is more, we want It In the same old way high priced crops. Please note that we described it as the "easiest way.' That is how we can again be prosperous, without with-out having to do some original thinking and planning, making some revolutionary changes in our habitual methods of working and living. There Is no magical strings that we can pull to produce prosperity. The u.')iial inclination of our business busi-ness men is to think in terms of "new industries." Sanpete County Is an agricultural agricul-tural county. We might as well face that fundamental fact. Our prosperity is tied up irrevocably now, and for some years, In the development of a new agricultural policy, which will make the thousands thous-ands of little farm-factories profitable prof-itable to their working owners or renters. That is the avenue by travelling we shall reach the desired de-sired prosperity. The journey will not be altogether alto-gether easy. Diversified agriculture agricul-ture has been introduced in Sanpete San-pete CuUnty far enough that we can say that the road to prosperity prosper-ity has been surveyed, but it has not been built. There are one-crop one-crop elevations to reduce and valleys val-leys of food products to be filled before we can travel the highway satisfactorily. How soon the road shall be built depends upon the thinking, plannings, working, and cooperation of us all. Our present crisis is not a political pol-itical one; it is economic. Legislation Legis-lation may help, but it can not make prosperity. Profitable agriculture ag-riculture will mean prosperity in Sanpete County, regardless of industrial in-dustrial depression elsewhore. Less one-crop fanners, more livestock, less buying of food and more living liv-ing at home; less gambling on what the market may do and more constructive production of the things we need at home. We need an agricultural conference to advise and inspire our farm program, pro-gram, followed by adequate financial fin-ancial support and hard, applied work. |
