Show Time To Call A Halt Here Is some worth-while talk from Charles P. Williams, President, Presi-dent, The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company: "The present paralysis of business busin-ess with its attendant unemployment unemploy-ment crisis is due in large part to the lact that municipal, state and federal taxes are consuming the capital upon which business and Industry operate. Make no mis take .brut it increased taxation produces business stagnation and unemployment. "Here is the situation: In 19;:: the cost of government federal, state and local--was 2 billion dollar.?, dol-lar.?, or 3 per cent of the national income. In 1931 it was 12 billion dollars, or 22 per cent of the national na-tional Income, and it has headed upward. One adult out of every 10 in the United States is on the public payroll. One day's earnings out of every 5 goes to pay cost of government. One dollar out of every ev-ery 3 of profit of a corporation or firm goes to taxes. This extravagance extrava-gance cripples all industry. "Nobody escapes taxes. When the government taxes industry, the tax is passed on to the consumer, con-sumer, and that makes everybody a taxpayer. The government is all of us and each of us. When the government borrows money it does so in your name and mine. We endorse the note and must pay it with interest. "The inevitable tendency of taxes tax-es is to increase. They wont stand still or recede unless there is an organized effort to control their devasting forward march. The present tax burden was built. up uy organized minorities, it can only be halted or diminished by the vociferous protest of an organized or-ganized majority." The only way to stop the rising cost of government is for our citizens citi-zens to vote NO on every candidate candi-date or measure standing for increased in-creased taxes through enlarged governmental activity, bond issues and cost burdens to be heaped upon up-on the public. |
