Show Braves Crash EastooCats & Vikes Lose I By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports j BOUNTIFUL --The only foot-: foot-: ball team around these parts smil-5 smil-5 ing this week are the Braves of j Bountiful since they were the only j squad to taste the fruits of victory 5 last week. . BOUNTIFUL traveled into Salt Lake to hand East a 28-6 setback to record their first region win of the season while Viewmont traveled to that same city only to get roughed : up by Highland. The third local side Woods Cross took their best shot at number one ranked Davis and after a great first half the Darts : finally put away the pesky Cats 35- . r 14. i After last week Highland and ; Davis are on top of the heap with 2-0 marks followed by Bountiful rand Woods Cross at 1-1 and then Viewmont and East at 0-2. 5 BOUNTIFUL 28 EAST 6 : The Braves scored a touchdown rin each of the four quarters in recording re-cording their first region win as sophomore quarterback Joey Covey enjoyed one of his finest ": days as a Brave. I BOUNTIFUL put their first ' period score on the board when ; Covey hit senior Ryan Rushton 'with a 10 yard scoring pass but it rwas the ensuing conversion that had people buzzing. The snap 'wasn't there but junior Andy Tovey made a great athletic move to get off a two point pass conver- sion to Rushton and the Braves let '8-0. ; " The lead increased in the second quarter when Covey and Rushton hooked up one more time, this one from about 30 yards out, and after junior Matt Bombard tacked on the point after the local squad had a 15-0 lead in the lockers at half time. ! " BY THE third period Covey was .having a field day picking out his .receivers and midway through the period he spotted junior speedster Mike Steed all alone from 33 yards out. Bombard missed the kick, one of his rare misses, but the Braves were in cruise control at 21-0. - East avoided the shutout in the ' third period when they scored on a counter type play from 3 1 yards out but the two point conversion failed and entering the final period the score was still 21-6 for the Braves. SOPHOMORE Syd Smith had been pushed into duty due to an injury to senior fullback Larry Merritt and the first year Brave runner capped off a fine debut with a 40 yard run on a single trap play that must have caught the Leopards off guard. Bombard tacked on the extra point and the Braves had their 28-6 win. HIGHLAND 24 VIEWMONT 6 - Things never did go right for the Vikings in this one. First of all they thought the game was at 4 instead of the 4:30 actual kickoff time and then on the very first play from scrimmage the Rams got a 66 yard touchdown. ;"I FELT in the first half we made some mental mistakes but then in the second half their size finally wore us down and they kick- f ' ed us pretty good" admitted Viking coach Warren Hatch. After the shock of that opening play touchdown the Viking defense settled down and controled the Rams to just a field goal. Meanwhile Mean-while on offense the line gave Bryan Hardy plenty of protection on their second drive and the senior iasser led his club down the field and finally hit paydirt with a seven yard pass to tight end Casey Kleinman. The kick after touchdown touch-down was blocked by one of the huge linemen that the Rams put on the field. THE BIG knockout punch for the Vikes came right before the half as in one drive one drive the Rams faked a punt near midfield for a first down and then once inside the ten yard line they faked a field goal and threw into the end zone for the touchdown. "Those two plays cer- i"T""""m""" '" 11 '- "a!"" - " " 1 I I l'JJ I ih - i - f I ' - r I P ,, v . Viewmont came out fired up for the second time but a facemask penalty and a fumble on the Rams four yard line did them in. First the Vike defense appeared to have stopped the Ram wishbone cold i " 1 I ' N- I II mill ii r i ii i mmm mmtm Ommmmmu but a facemask penalty helped keep the drive alive and then when the Vikes were driving for a scorea receiver, iri an attempt to pick up extra yards, was hit and coughed up the ball to the Rams. THE BIGGEST loss, besides their second region defeat, was the fact that the game was so physical and the Vikes lost both Terry Crawford and Lynn Oyler to injuries in-juries plus several other players who were banged up. DAVIS 31 WOODS CROSS 14 For one half it appeared as if the Wildcats could pull off a big win over the Darts but then in the second half the Darts showed good reason for their number one ranking rank-ing as they pulled away to a relatively rela-tively easy win. THE CATS started the fireworks off right off the bat as they tried a successful onside kick on the opening open-ing kickoff. However the Cats couldn't move the ball and once their offense got their hands on the ball the Darts put the first points up with Chris Card going in from 23 yards out. Woods Cross came right back on their next possession though as quarterback Brad Worthen capped off the drive with a one yard plunge and when Mike Chabries booted the point after the score was knotted knot-ted 7-7. THE COACHES had instructed Chabries to kick a low line drive type kickoff this time and the senior kicker just happened to hit one of the Davis linemen on the leg and Woods Cross recovered the odd onside kick. This time though the Cats didn't move and punted only to see the Davis receiver drop the ball and the Cats recovered. "They certainly helped us a little with those two miscues" admitted Cat coach Larry Eldracher. This time the Cats took advantage advan-tage of the turnover as Worthen found Eric Robinson in the end zone and after the foot of Chabries had given them another point the Cats quieted the homecomin? crowd of the Darts by taking a 14-7 lead. . DAVIS CAME right back with senior Casey Lloyd going in from 10 yards out to bring the Darts to within one point at .14-13 but the Darts wept for two points and the pass was incomplete. It looked like the Cats would go into the lockers with the one point lead but with about three seconds left in the half the Darts scored ona long pass from Lloyd to Roge Clawson. "That play really hurt admitted Eldracher, "we were in a prevent defense and our safety get out of position. Davis threw up a prayer pass and they caught it-Again it-Again the two point conversion failed and the score was 19-14 at half. THE SECOND half was a different diffe-rent story as the famed Kaysviiw wishbone finally began to click and control both the ball and the time-A time-A safety from their strong defense and runs from Lloyd and Caro were all the scoring in the final t periods as the Darts pulled awW and coasted to the win. |
