Show Annual Red Cross Roll Call A. L. Schafer, manager of the Pacific Branch, in a letter to the local chapter emphasizes a resolution reso-lution adopted by the Central Committee, governing body, of the national organization, in which it says that in order to meet the greatest emergency in relief giving giv-ing that it has faced since the World War, the Red Cross needs greater support through increased membership. Mrs. Bent R. Hansen, chairman, with her group of volunteers conducting con-ducting the Red Cross Roll Call for memberships which opens Friday, Fri-day, . November H, and continues until Thanksgiving, are typical of the thousands throughout the United States who serve in the cause of mercy. Mayor's Proclamation "This year the economic emergency emer-gency lends special importance to the annual Roll Call for membership member-ship campaign of the American Red Cross which will be held from Armistice Day to Thanksgiving, Thanks-giving, November 11-24. "The Red Cross is the recognized relief agency throughout the Nation. Na-tion. It is chartered by Congress and accorded the cooperation of the Federal government. "In the- unemployment crisis it has borne a great relief responsibility, responsi-bility, 2,276 of its 3,639 chapters, giving direct aid to nearly a half million families. "It has been the authorized medium me-dium for distribution of - Farm Board wheat and cotton clothing to those In need and distress. Its volunteers have been unstinting In devotion to the task of collecting collect-ing and distributing supplies, and in the production of finished goods from materials. "Hundreds of thousands of gardens gar-dens planted from Red Cross seed also have yielded their produce to feed the hungry. "To unemployment and drought relief projects have been added 05 disasters calling for Red Cross assistance as-sistance in the period of one year. Drought in the Northwest, tornadoes torna-does in the Southeast, floods in the Central South, and a variety of other catastrophies have entailed en-tailed mighty burdens on the organization. "Notwithstanding all the mani-fold mani-fold relief calls, regular Red Cross r services such as assistance to veterans, vet-erans, life-saving, first aid, public health nursing, home hygiene and Junior Red Cross, have been cai ried steadily forward. "Our present debt of gratitude to the organization lovingly known as "The Greatest Mother" is great. Every one who is able to take out a membership, as a good citizen, and as a patriot should do so. "As mayor of Mt. Pleasant, I, therefore, proclaim Red Cross Roll Call, November 11-24, as a matter ' of prime civic duty and urge oui citizenship to lend its heartiest support." Signed W. P. WINTERS, Mayor. |
