Show Soils for Orchard Should Be Deep and Fairly Heavy The soil for the orchard should be deep and resonably heavy, with a clay subsoil, so as to retain moisture .well. IJght land with porous subsoil cannot be made to hold sufficient moisture mois-ture to sustain the trees In n vigorous growing condition. The exposure of the orchard is also an Important factor. fac-tor. It Is well known that northern slopes usually support more vegetation than do pouthern slopes. They are less exposed to the sun's rays ami hence the soils are cooler and contain more moisture throughout the year. It- Is evident, therefore, that the non-Irrigated non-Irrigated orchard should have a northern north-ern or northeastern exposure. |
