The spark plug Is of the greatest Importance but, because of tl e excellent ex-cellent performance it gives, with hardly any attention, the average driver lets It alone. When the plug finally does go bad he simply Inserts a new one and throws the old one away, '.Unking that It has given sufficient suf-ficient service for his dollar. But, as a matter of fact, a little Intelligent attenth x to that plug would not only prolong Its life, but give It added power and enable the car to run much weev-T. Easy to Clean. You don't have to be an Ignition expert to clean a spark plug. Any one -an do It with a little practice, using old plugs to experiment with at first. Because of the various grades of gasoline gaso-line sold these days more and more trouble Is encountered with fouling pings. Naturally the first operation In cleaning a spark plug is to remove It from the engine cylinder. Many motorists use any old tool as long as the plug comes out. Don't du this. Get a spark plug wrench that will fit your particular type of plug and use It. The plug Is then placed In a vise and the vice Jaws set up on the hexagon hexa-gon nut at the base of the plug. Here another good wrench must be used to remove the packing nut or gland, working work-ing It off slowly so that you won't injure in-jure either the porcelain or gasket between the porcelain and shell. Possibly Pos-sibly your type of plug won't have this gasket. The majority do have gaskets gas-kets and it Is a good 'plan to keep new gaskets on hand along with new porcelains to replace those that are defective. I Don't Use Knife. ' Now that the plug Is taken apart, a rag and gasoline come into play. Remove Re-move all semblance of carbon and oil from the surface of the porcelain Do cot use a knife, file, steel scraper, sandpaper or any other abrasive substance sub-stance on the plug porcelain. This porcelain is glazed nnd is intended by the pluu manufacturer to be perfectly smooth so that carbon cannot lodge upon It easily. Consequently any utiiasive that will cut this glassy surface sur-face should never be used. The gasoline gaso-line and rag will do the work. |
