Bureau of Education if he presini plans materialize". Under'.lu direction of Prof A. L. Mathews, head of the rural education department of me University of Utah, schools will have the children plant gardens in their back yards, evenif the plan to correlate corre-late the study of books with something some-thing practical, and emphasis will be laid on the productive labor rather rath-er than on the production itself. The individual plot of growing things will give the child something to work for and so teach him interest and pride in his own work. The scheme is something on the order of the school garden ideas, as the school officials will keep some supervision over the children, encouraging and helping them in every way possible At the same time the work will be considered part of the school study. Prof. Mathews has charee of the work in Utah, Idaho and, Wyoming. In the latter state they have tried the pfan one year and he reports that this year practically every school in the state will have the plan in operation. He has a number of the larger towns of Utah ready to begin the work and beiore long expects ex-pects to have every child in Utah working on a garden of his own. |
