Fire Destroys Wasatch Mercantile Company's Store Fire broke out in the Wasatch Merchantile Store early Thursday morning and destroyed most of the big stock of merchandise carried by the company. The building was badly bad-ly damaged. The fire was discovered at 4 o'clock in the morning by Miss Anna Johansen, night operator for the telephone Company. Com-pany. She called the fire department and the alarm was sounded. R. W. We cell made good time in getting the fire engine on the grounds and by that time other members of the department were on the scene and firefighting began. The main par? of the building was saved, but the interior and most of the fixtures were wrecked. It is not known just how the fire orginateel but it is thought it started in the flue near the furnace. " There was $5,000 insurance carried on the building and $15,000 insurance carried on the merchandise. The insurance will cover a small part of the loss. Mr. V. L. Johnson, manager mana-ger 'of the company, states that there was $35,000 worth of merchandise in the store. The fire caused fully $30,000 loss. The Wasatch Store is owned by a cbrpb.ration, the principal stockholders being Mrs. Vilate B. Johnson, of Salt Lake City, V. L. Johnson of this city, O. N. Clemensen, George P. Peterson, C. V. Anderson, James Larsen, H. C. Beaumann and Bent R. Hansen of this city, and James Wrathall of Grants-ville, Grants-ville, Utah. The Company lias rented a building on State Street owned own-ed by Laurita Larsen, and will conduct the business at that place until the big building on Main Street can be repaired. |
