Show PLANES COLLIDE SIX ARE KILLED TWO OFFICERS AND FOUR MEN MEET DEATH AS FOKKER MACHINE MA-CHINE CAUSES COLLISON Others Killed Instantly in Leaping From Plane at Langely Field Official Investigation Under Way Newport News. Major Gearhart, Captain Doyle and four enlisted men were killed at Langeiy field Wednesday Wednes-day when a Martin bomber collided with an airplane while making a landing. It was reported that the Fokker side-swiped the Martin, but officials at the flying station refused to confirm con-firm or deny this until they had made an investigation. The machines had been up for a practice spin. The enlisted men killed were: Staff Sergeant Marick and Privates Bunka, Leon Rolas and Thomas Jordan. The bomber was in the air when Major Gearhart took off in a Fokker. The lighter machine struck the tail of the bomber and both machines fell. Major Gearhart, Captain Doyle and Sergeant Marick were caught in the wreckage and burned to death and Privates Blunka and Jordan were killed almost instantly when they Jumped. Tbe smaller machine struck the bomber amidships cutting of the tail. Both planes hovered a moment, then both broke into flames and crashed. |
