Show "Wood Torpedo" Chases Its Prey All By Itself Inventor of Marvelous War Engine is Taying Mount Pleasant a Visit. Montraville M. Wood, lecturer and inventor, is to be a Mount Pleasant visitor next Wednesday night as the first number of the Lyceum Course. After years of research work in his laboratory at Berwyn, 111., during which time he has perfected a device for the direction, of torpedoes by sound waves, Mr. Wood is now le" turing on how the government may cope with the submarine. The "Wood torpedo" has "ears," according accord-ing to the inventor. The mechanism of the torpedo devised de-vised by Mr. Wood is directed by a "brain box," the secret of which is known only to Mr. Wood and high officials of the' United States navy department. This "brain box," which is in each torpedo of the Wood type, is surrounded by high explosives explo-sives so that the secret of it may be confined only to proper officers of our government. This "brain box" cannot be opened even by the inventor after it is installed in-stalled in a torpedo- The method of shooting the torpedo is to place a "master brain box" in the water and detect the presence of ships by the sound waves created by the propellers propel-lers of vessels. The "tone" of any particuliar enemy ship may be de tected and the "brain box" 'of the "Wood torpedo is then attuned to this tone. It will then seek out the ship to which it is toned and sink it, says Inventor Wood. In the event the ship desired as prey stops its engines, the Wood torpedo tor-pedo takes a dive and remains deep beneath the surface of the waves until the ship is started again.. Then it goes after its mark. In case the torpedo is thown out of the water by rolling waves, it will right itself again, says Mr. Wood, and seek its prey. Mr. Wood's lecture at the Elite Theatre Wednesday night, November 21, is the first number of Mount Pleasant's Lyceum Course for the present year. Get season tickets now for all five numbers at $1.5 0. Single admissions will be 5 0 cents for adults and 35 cents for students. The lecture lec-ture begins at 8 o'clock. |
