Show Fall: Time To Fight Weeds In The Lawn The question is often asked; When is the best time to knock out weeds in my lawn - spring or fall? I would have to ask first, what weed are you aiming aim-ing to kill? CRABGRASS FOR instance is better controlled by a pre-emergence pre-emergence material applied in late April or early May. Either time will do, but late summer or early fall get the preference for most weeds. Then the question is asked, why? Most of the weeds that will be in your lawn next spring are there now. If weeds are killed in the fall bluegrass will move in the bare spots during the fall and early next spring. THE WEATHER is generally more favorable in the fall. Plants that may be injured in-jured in the spring by chemicals have hardened and ready to go into the winter. There is not nearly the danger of chemical damage to such plants. If you kill the dandelions in the fall there will be no plants to reseed your lawn next spring unless it is your neigh-bors neigh-bors who does not spray. If you spray do so with low pressure when the wind is not blowing and keep the mist away from tender plants, says Melvin S. Burningham, U.S.U. Area Horticulturist. A SPRAY of silvex at double strength if applied within the next couple of weeks will not injure your bluegrass but will kill most of the broadleaf weeds and will get some of the fine grass or bent grass. Most of the lawn weed chemicals on the market if applied right are safe to use this time of the year, concludes Mr. Burningham. |
