Show Pencils In Mouths Spread Diphtheria. School Epidemic, Ends Custom of giving giv-ing Out and Collecting Those Arti-clez Arti-clez Daily. Suffield, Conn., Nov. 30. Lead pencils, distributed and collected every day in the' lower grades of the Bridge street grammar school, are held responsible for an epidemic of diphtheria among the pupils. Dr. W. E. Caldwell, the town's health physician, today ordered the pencils burned and forbade the continuance of the custom. Fifteen of the forty pupi's in two rooms have the disease, some of the cases being dangerous. Dr. Caldwell Cald-well found that nearly all the children child-ren put the pencils in their mouths, thus furnishing good carriers for the germs. |
