Show Indians Seek Support Of Mayors Indians from 27 different tribes have sought help from Utah Native Consortium, Inc. in Salt Lake City, Terry Nelson Nel-son told mayors of the 16 Davis County cities as he asked for approval of an application for $113,750 in federal funds. THE SALT Lake center is a statewide service, but most of the efforts have been confined to that city because that is where most of the Indians in this area are, says Mr. Nelson. "Our entire staff of 27 people are native American," he said. He explained that Indians In-dians will seek help from the Consortium, bypassing others because they identify with them and don't have a language lan-guage barrier. "WE ARE slowly going out and contacting urban Indians, but we can't go on the reservations reser-vations as they have their own programs," he said. "We seek to place them in jobs or give them training. Many of them won't go to an employment agency." The Consortium saw approximately 300 native Americans during the first three months they were organized or-ganized and placed 35 on jobs, "plus handling many personal problems," he added. HE estimated there are about 14,000 Indians eligible for the program. About one-half one-half of them are Navajo. The mayors unanimously approved the fund application for the organization, which under the federal comprehensive comprehen-sive Employment and Training Train-ing Act. |
