Show RAILROADS FORCED TO PUGEEMBAR60 EXPORT FLOUR AND GRAIN FILL CARS NEEDED FOR OTHER COMMODITIES. Western Dealers Ship Goods for Export Ex-port Without Engaging Steamships to Handle Shipments, Causing Caus-ing Congestion at Terminal. Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania railroad announced Monday that it had placed embargoes on export flur and lumber at New York and on all export grain at Philadelphia and Bal timore. No other commodities are af fected by these embargoes, according to the announcement, which were placed to expedite the movement of other freight. Although Pennsylvania railroad offi cers would not add anything to their announcement, it was said by local grain dealers that the embargoes were necessitated by the scarcity of ships to carry the products across the Atlantic. At-lantic. Many western dealers, they declare, have shipped quantities or goods for export without first engag ing steamships to handle it, causing congestion at terminal points as well as temporarily locking up thousands of freight cars loaded with export goods. Freight cars loaded with grain for export have been pouring into Philadelphia Phila-delphia for weeks, with but few vessels ves-sels to take care of it. As a result, the Pennsylvania elevators are filled to their capacity and it is estimated that between 35,000 and 40,000 loaded cars are "parked" on sidings and in the yards of the eastern carriers. |
