The troops and police at many places in Italy were called on Sunday to keep down riotous demonstrations demon-strations against Austria at celebrations celebra-tions of the anniversary of the death of the Irredentist leader, Oberdank, who organized the unsuccessful plot to assassinate Emperor Francis Joseph Jo-seph in Trieste in 1882 and was put to death for it. During the night of Saturday parties to the movement placarded the streets with posters referring to Oberdank and also distributed leafllets bearing the inscription, "Remember the sacrifice sacri-fice of Oberdank." Several were arrested ar-rested and some demonstrators were slightly injured in clashes with the police. The republican deputy, Cola Anni, delivered a speech to a sympathetic audience, which frequently broke into applause, as the speaker recited the history of the "Triestan Martyr," and his ideals, and declared it was necessary neces-sary soon to realize them. The dem onstration reached its climax when Ricciotti Garibaldi, son of the Italian patriot Garibaldi, leaning on his crutches arose and said: "A voice is still ringing from Capre-ra Capre-ra island, where my father is buried. It asks for acts, not words, from the committee promoting the enlistment of volunteers." As Garibaldi ceased there was a tremendous tre-mendous outburst of applause and cries of "Long live Italy," "Long live Trent," and "Long live Trieste!" Sunday afternoon the republican association as-sociation held a procession and later unveiled a marble tablet in the Republican Re-publican club in honor of Oberdank. |
