Student Scholarship Under the terms of the Ful-bright Ful-bright Act, passed a year ago, thte State Department will initiate initi-ate a program of sending American Ameri-can students to twenty-two countries coun-tries for study under scholarships financed by the sale of some war-surplus material overseas. Altogether, a fund of $137,950,-000 $137,950,-000 is available for a twenty-year period. It will also finance the transportation of some foreign 'students to institutions of learning learn-ing in this country. Some 12,000 applications have already been received from Americans who wish to study aboad and 5,000 of them are entitled to veterans' preference under the law. It is interesting to note the assignment as-signment of funds to the educational educa-tional exchanges. Not more than $1,000,000 can be spent in any one country in any one year, with $20,000,000 the top limit for any one nation. This amount is assigned as-signed to Italy, the United Kingdom King-dom and China. The next highest high-est sum, $8,000,000 is assigned tr Greece and Poland; $7,000,000 tr. the Netherlands Indies; $6,000,000 to Czecho-Slovakia; and $5,000,-000 $5,000,-000 to Australia, Findland. Hungary, Hun-gary, France, and the Netherlands. Nether-lands. Smaller amounts are a-vailable a-vailable for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Iran, New . Zealand, Turkey and Burma. In accordance with the Act, the President has named a ten-rrem-ber board to select the American students who will receive assistance assist-ance offered under the measure. |
