Robert Sundwall of Fairview and Fred Allred of Spring City are among the poets whose work appears in the new Utah Sings, state anthology of verse which has just been published. Of the 1700 or more poems submitted 370 were selected for the collection. collec-tion. These include some of the best work done by Utah writers since 1934, according to the editor, edi-tor, Dr. Carlton Culmsee, head of the Brigham Young University journalism department. A number of war poems, some by persons actually in military service, give the book a timely note. Other innovations which the 1934 volume did not have are sections of verse for children and verse of religious aspiration, in addition to general poetry. The book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Harrison R. Merrill and Mrs. Elsie Talmage Brandley, co-editors of the first anthology of 1934. Both have passed away since doing their epoch-making work. In the o-pinion o-pinion of critics the hew collection collec-tion reveals tht Utah poets have made notable progress in recent years. Christensen, head of the English department, and biographical notes on 152 Utah writers. It Is bound in green embossed satin stamped in gold and contains 320 pages. |
