Show Luker Named Head Of SCS Regional Office ALBUQUERQUE, June 18 Cyril Luker, assistant conserva lor for the Soil Conservation Service at Amarillo for the last four years, has been appointed SCS regional conservator of the Southwest Region with headquarters headquar-ters at Albuquerque, it was officially of-ficially announced today. Mr. Luker succeeds Hugh G. Calkins, who recently accepted a position as regional director of a health and sanitation and rulb-ber-oolleeting project being sponsored spon-sored in Central America 'by the Office of Inter-American Affair;. Af-fair;. The Southwest Region,, which, Mr. Luker .aIH administer, adminis-ter, includes New M'exico, Arizona, Ari-zona, Utah and Colorado. Under the new organization, Floyd D. Matthews and R. V. Boyle will continue in their .posi-1 .posi-1 ions as assistant conservators in tihe regional o:fifice here. - Mr. Lukier came to the Soil Conservation Service im 1935 as dhief of tihe regional planning division di-vision at Amarillo. In IMay, 1938, he was promoted to the position of assistant conservator and as such "Aas second in comlmand of Service operations in tihe Southern South-ern Great Plains region. "During the present emergency," emergen-cy," Mr. Luker stated, "The use of soil and water conservation practices must be an important part of the nation's agricultural program. Born in Comanche County, Texas, -on February 28, 1899, Mr. Luker has spent most of his life in the Lone Star State. During the first World War he left his class, -work at Texas A. Sc. M. Col-I'.ge Col-I'.ge to enlist, and returned after 1 1 he war to get a bachelor's de-grre de-grre in animal husbandry in 1921. Immediately upon graduation from college, Mr. Luker went to work a; vocational agriculture instructor at Fort Stockton, Texas. Tex-as. From there, he went to Texas Tex-as A. & M. College to do teacher teach-er training Aork, and then to Texas Technological College at .Lubbock as head of the teacher 'training department. |
