Show Road Commission Closes Bridges To Overloads As a safety measure pending reconsl ruction or reinforcement, tne State Road Commission this week took action to close 199 bridges located on state roads, to tiucks w th overloads that may overtax the structures to a point of collapse, which might caue loss of life as well as considerab.c loss of property. Many of tiie hi idges were constructed before the roads on which they are located lo-cated became a part of the state road system. A thorough survey of the bridges brid-ges by the bridge department of Ihe Road Commission shows that 101 bridges affected by the order aie inadequate to carry the loads now being transported over the spans. All of the bridges will be posted with signs, showing t.ie load limit permitted over them so that truckers will be fully warned warn-ed of the danger. The 199 bridges to be posied with signs are located in the following fol-lowing districts: D strict No. 1. Weber, Cache, Box Elder, Morgan, Rich, Daggett, Dag-gett, and part of Summit Coun-lies; Coun-lies; 18 bridges, 5 to 15 tons limits. District No. 2. Salt Lake, Tooele, Davis, and part of Summit Counties; Coun-ties; 14 bridges, 3 to 15 tons limit. D strict No. 3. Sanpete, Sevier, Se-vier, Piute, Garfield, Kane, and part of Wayne Counties; 34 bridges, brid-ges, 5 to 15 tons limits. District No. 4. Carbon, Emery, Grand, San Juan, and part of Wayne Counties; 62 bridges, 3 to 18 tons limits. District No. 5. Juab, Millard, Iron, Beaver, and Washington Counties; 47 bridges, 3 to 15 tons limits. District No. 6. Utah, Wasatch, Duchesne and Uintah Counties, 47 bridges. 3 to 15 tons limits. Bridges on all major highways generally are in splendid condition condi-tion for year round heavy traffic, traf-fic, according to W. D. Hammond, Chairman of the Commission. Recent compilations show that b3 per cent of the trucks and trail-jrs trail-jrs carry from 10 to 20 tons, 8 per cent are loads of more than 20 tons, and 3 per cent are 30 ions or more. According to the report many of the worst structures are in uhe coal hauling district and are subject sub-ject continually to heavy overloads. over-loads. The fact 'hat these bridges brid-ges are now carrying the overloads over-loads does not mean that they are in safe condition to continue to carry the strain, and the danger s that they may collapse at any time. |
