Show Sugar Beet f GrowersWillGet Ample Labor War Food Administration To f; Get Behind Sugar Beet Labo: Problems 100 Per Cent k Hart J. Sanders, District Manager Man-ager of Gunnison Sugar, Inc. ad-vfses ad-vfses that after two weeks of con-(erences con-(erences in Washington between : the sugar beet growers, process- ors, and War iood Administration, Administra-tion, both are confident that the food administration will get behind be-hind the labor problems of the Beet Sugar industry. As a matter mat-ter of fact, this was the assurance given to the beet growers and the processors by Marvin Jones, Food Administrator, Earl Wilson, Director Di-rector of the sugar division, Commodity Com-modity Credit Corporation, and General Burton, who is handling the Mexican Nationals and War Prisoners. The extreme shortage of sugar in and of itself is going to insure labor to the grower. We are taking steps now, through the war Food Administration and the War Department, to get labor for this district well organized before it is needed. We have been definitely assured that growers wishing to contract for labor through the season, that is, from the commencement of the ' thining to the finish of the harvest har-vest can be guaranteed that labor if they have housing available. , We also have assurance that the War Department will see ; that the War Prisoners labor is available at the time beet grow- j ers need them. ' As to the question of Japanese labor, would like to say that a recent order release them from the location centers in January, of this year, providing, however, ! they can find employment and re-locate, which we believe will , be of great benefit to the beet ; industry instead of a detriment. In checking information from the top officials of the War Relocation Reloca-tion Authority, it is our opinion that there will not be a heavy migration of Japanese to the Pacific Pa-cific coast area during the year of 1945, due to vigerous opposition opposi-tion in some localities, also that many are without financial sup-1 . port, so it will be necessary for, a number of them to locate where i they can secure employment and support themselves. With the above assurance of labor, in addition to the highest! beet prices in the history of the business again guaranteed for the 1945 crop, we are asking all growers to plant a maximum j acreage this year, which would make it possible for Gunnison j Sugar, Inc. to attain the goals War Food Administration are asking us to reach in order to take care of the existing sugar shortage, Mr. Sanders concluded. |
