Tne new vanity of imut rcoistant wheat was bred at the Utah State experiment station by Prcf.ssor n. C. Tie.gy. It was produced by hybridization hy-bridization in re rponse to an urgent need fcr some more effective means cf controlling tine serious disease of wheat which exacts a toll of approximately ap-proximately $250,000 a year frcm the Utah growers. In addition to being be-ing resistant to the forms of covered smut mc. t prevalent in this area, it also appeal's to be equal in all ether respects, such as yields, winter win-ter hardness, and quality, to best varitieL now b-ing grown in this leg on. The female parent cf "Reiief" is known as Hussar. It is a pureline seln'tion from R d Hussar, the oil-g oil-g n of which is undertermined. This variety is not grown commercially because it is not a high yielder; neither is the grain of good quality, j but it is re;istant to ma t cf the ! forma o covered smut occurring in iUtah, Proftssor Tingey said, j Turkey 26, the male parent, is a ! pureline selection cut cf the Turkey va: ety made at the No phi dry farm cuhaiat'on.
