Show Selected Thoughts. Think of defeating men like Senator Noma and electing men like Hamilton Fish. Are the great Progrossives to be martyred and blind demagogues and backward-looking reactionaries given power? If so the futnre is dismal and the peace will again be defeated by a new murderer's row in the senate. A local editorial has denounced everything that has been d i '!( for the unemployed and the poor in the last ten years, mi i maintains that feeding and helping the poor has been the cause of the downfall of nations. No greater libel iiii'm nst the poor was ever uttered. Nations have invariably f U n because of centralized wealth, tyrannical and corrupt i iiiers. monopolization of land and resources, oppression and ui'Uiadation of the masses etc. 0 that we had the power to writ' across the sky with Lord Byron so that even the dumb could read, that history has but one story of nations, wealth, conquest, glory, fame, decay and barbarism. That tell it all Pity the poor corporations. Here are a few of the things that are happening to some of the big ones. The net, earnings earn-ings for a year of Genera! Motors dropped from 43 millions to 36 milions. Dupont's earnings dropped frrom 24 millions to 16 millions. U. S. Steel dropped from 34 millions to 13 millions. mil-lions. And when the taxes are taken care of they are almost ready to go on relief. 'Men many of them .Teat men, are talking and planning the peace to follow the war. But the truth is that they'll have little or nothing to do with it. Men trying to make an immature imma-ture peace are opposing the plans and purposes of the Almigh-y. Almigh-y. Take this truth from us, readers not ours but the sure word of the old Book, which is a perfect blue print- of the war from beginning to end, and how, when and where the peace will come. This is tne truth that would free men from many of their fears if they wonld only believe it. The war will go the way holy writ has charted it no matter what men and parties may do. And this time no human power will be able to wreck the peaee because the Prince of peace will manage it. What right have we to call ourselves an enlightened, Christ ian nation, the champions of the oppressed, when we allow the childhood of our future citizens to be poisoned at it very source by the lack of the essentials of life which are necessary to their proper growth and development? Are we asleep? Do we not realize that no country can be better than its people It is a Fascist movement that they would foist upon the people to lead them into slaveo'. If ever there was a time when Progressives and Liberals and Labor should stand together to-gether it is now. If the forces of reaction succeed with their plans they will destroy all the progressive gains, and forge new shackles for Liberals and labor, destroy unions and cooperatives coop-eratives and enter upon anoiher debauch of Capitalism gone mad. People, don't let them fool you again. Mothers throughout the world place the same value upon their children, yet most of them, victims of the maladjustments maladjust-ments of a vicious system they did not create, are forced to bear and rear these jewels of theirs in conditions, which render impotent the high ideals all mothers entertain for the future . welfare and happiness of their children. What mother does not dream of fame for her son and daughter and a fairer and more complete life than she has had? . At the same time she realizes with a catch at the heart that she cannot give her dear ones enough milk or food or fresh air or enough of the simple things which mean good health and good morals in children. It is still true that one-third of our people are ill-fed, ill-housed ill-housed and ill clothed. For every one that is able to buck such an adverse environment and rise to a position of security and prestige, ten thousand fall into the pits of crime, disease, and discouragement that beset their paths. The crowding of our prisons today bears grim testimony to the odds against j children from this underprivileged group. There is no standing still. Either America moves forward or it moves backward. It is our desire to help move it forward for-ward and to push it as far as possible against the darkness of ignorance, intolerance, poverty and sinister reaction. But there are forces that desire to push it backward into the golden 20's whfn they reveled in wealth and pleasure much like the Babylonians. The financial and industrial powers believe that they know it all and that they can best rule the people. The truth is that they have "a standing inability to look anyway but backward." They think of nothingl but profits and new ways to exploit the people. They have their great newspapers like Heart's and Mc Cormick's and Patterson's Patter-son's to support them. Columnists like the man Pegler, and a defamer of the government like Sokolsky are used to basely deceive and betray the people end my, how they are succeeding, suc-ceeding, while people are top spineless to protest. True Christianity ban the only truth that will make me, free but it is the kind of truth that men prefer not to hear much less to practise. Calamity is visited upon humanity because be-cause it has set aside its spiritnal heritage. Above all Christianity must never let the truth be obscured obscur-ed that man is a child of God and distinguished from the ani- mat by the spiritual force within him; that life has a purpose and a divine meaning and that when it ends it but "closes on the twiiight and opens on the dawn" of continued life, And that man, while here must become united and made fit to live in a new and higher order in which moral and spiritual law must govern all his relations between him and his fellows, and i between nations. J True and real Christianity should never be busy render ing unto Ceaser the things that are God's. It must proclaim always that God is above the slate, above governments. It should ever assert that no people are destined to rule over lesser les-ser people without their consent. It should stand against race discrimation by proclaiming that God is the father of all and has made of one blood all people, with varying gifts to be developed in freedom and pooled and used for the good of all. It must maintain that each person is of priceless value and that no power has a right to make him a slave. It should extend its influence in politics to show that man finds freedom only under laws, but that they must be just laws, freely made by common consent. |
