Show WHAT IS THE LIMIT OF CREDIT OF THESE UNITED STATES? Imimrts of gold into this country since wc became be-came belligerent total $21. 1 ,000,000. And the entire amount of gold brought in since the war in Europe began Is $1,677,000,000. The Journal des Debuts, an influential Parisian newspaper, now tells us that we can expect no more gold from Europe, that wo must ask for no more, that our position as a nation nt war with Germany Ger-many compels us to furnish to our European allies all the credits they may require nnd that wc shall be hold ungenerous and slackers if we fail in this regnrd. Simultaneous with this the British parliament is discussing fiscal legislation which Indicates a purpose to neck a billion and a quarter of dollars from American. All this points to a condition where our legislators and financiers should be seeking nn understanding, between themselves and with tho governments of our allies to say nothing of the people of the United Statos. There must Bomowhore bo a limit to our ability to produce money, whether for our own use or for that of our allies. If prices arc to bo regulated, profits depleted, production" diminished and taxation increased while at tho same time wo nrc to be drained in credit for tho benefit of European nations with whom wo stand what will tho end be? The time to consider these problems Is now, before conditions have become ncute not nfter futile trial of vague expedients hns depleted all our productive capacities. |
