Show AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE MAN TALKS ON TATERS The Hun Hpctlul Ken Ice LOGAN, June 10. From present indications Utah will hnvc n bumper crop of potatoes this year, says Prof. J. C. HogenBon of the extension division of tho Utah Agricultural college. Professor Profes-sor Hogenson has just completed u tour of tho state and declares Hmt V,,H.tub?r.cro' wln bo excellent, favorable weather ncrmit-ting, ncrmit-ting, If tho right enre is given tho potatoes. Care must bo exercised exer-cised during cultivation, irrigation and harvesting, warns Professor Pro-fessor Ilogenson. "Perhaps none of tho cultivated crops show the (ffect of cureless culture more than iotatoes," ho states. "Weeds rob the soil of moisture and plant food which should go to increase the yield of ixitutocs. "hi order to get good cooking quality in potatoes, it is necessary neces-sary to grow thenl under as nearly flat cultivation as possible, judge them up but very little just enough to irrigate. Where the seed bed has been properly prepared and cultivation thoroughly thorough-ly done, it will, in most casos, not bo necessary to irrigate until after tho vines have come Into full bloom, then ridge up slightly every other row nnd Irrigate. When it becomes time to irrigate again, furrow out the other rows and run the water there "During all other irrigations, run tho witter through all the rows. Cu tivate as soon after irrigation as the soil will permit. Do not irrigate at tho time plants are coming into bloom, because ut that particular period tho plants nre using all possible cneriry in tho starting of new tubers, nnd any check which tho plants re-Icelve re-Icelve during that period lessens the number of tubers set If the nlnnts will not go without wnter until the full blooming period I irrigate before they start to bloom. ' "Where the soil In which the potatoes ure grown is heavy and , clayey, the rows may be ridged up moru so that when irrigating I the level of the water in tho furrows will be below tho soil where tho new tubers nre forming. This will ennblo you to dig your potatoes po-tatoes more eusily und get them out of tho soil in n clean condition, or without soil adhering to them. ' "The aim in irrigating should be to keep tho soil at as even -i temperature, and tho samo moisture content as possible through out the growing period of the jjlants." h |
