Show PEOPLE LEARNING TO APPRECIATE GOOD SHADE TREES. Towns nnd cities that are favored with good shade trees are learning to appreciate them.' Residents of such communities, when visiting in larger cities that have a plentiful lack of trees arc taught to notice the difference and return home doubly glad at their own good fortune. In many of the small cities efforts have been made to conserve the trees, and for this purpose forestry for-estry departments of the city governments are organized. Work is done that compares favorably favor-ably with that achieved on n larger scale by the nntional government. In one illustration nt hand, from the report 0 a park board, really remarkable work Is Indicated Indi-cated in saving a shade tree. The lower part of the tree had become diseased and n holt eaten into in-to it large enough for a man to crnw Into. If such a thing had happened to a tree In Price it is probable that the tree would have been cut down ns useless. Not so in this case, however, for the decayed parts were removed by the city forester, thoroughly scraped out- and cleaned, much like n surgeon would clean a wound. Then the opening was filled with cement. With this dried, the bark gradually grew over the cement and in due course the tree will be as good ns new. Trees in Price should be taken care of and treated when diseased. A shade tree is not only an asset to the property on which It stnnds. It is likewise an asset to the community if it stands nlongsido a sidewalk. It is really the community's commun-ity's interest to sec thnt the trees alongside walks nrc kept in good shape. Antl the time will come when a community official will keep as watchful an eye upon them ns the health officer does upon health matters affecting the community. |
