President Wilson, in n pro-, pro-, clamation today, delKnnted'Thurdny, November 28th, ns Thnnks-iKivins Thnnks-iKivins Day, nnd Haid this year the American people have special mid moving cause to be Kratcful and rejoice. Complete victory, he said, has brought not only peace, but the confident promise of a new day ns well, in which "justice shall replace force nnd jealous intrigue nmong the nations. The proclamation follows: THANKSGIVING, 1918. HY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION. It has long been our custom to turn in the nutumn of the year in praise and thanksgiving to Almighty God for His many blessings bless-ings nnd mercies to us ns a nation. This year we have n special nnd moving cause to be grateful and to rejoice. God has in His good pleasure given us pence. It has not come ns n mere cessation cessa-tion of nrms, n mere relief from the strnln nnd trngedy of wnr. It hits come ns n grcnt triumph of right Complete victory hns brought us, not peace nlonc, but the confident promise of n new day as well, in which justice shall rcplnce force and jealous intrigue nmong the nntions. Our gnllnnt armies hnve participated in a triumph which is not mnrred or stained by another purpose oi' solfish uggression. In n righteous cause they have won immortal im-mortal glory nnd have nobly served their nation in serving mankind. man-kind. God has indeed been gracious. We have cause for such rejoicing ns revives and strengthens in us all the best traditions of our natlonnl history. While wo render thanks for thene things, let us not forget to see the Divine guidance in tho performance of those duties, nnd Divine morcy and forgiveness for all errors of act or purpose, and I pray that in nil tlmt we do we shnll strcngthon the tics of friendship friend-ship nnd mutual renpoct upon which we must build the new struc-l struc-l ture of ponce and good will among the nations. ! Whorofore, 1, Woodrow Wilson, president of the United States of America, do hereby designate Thursday, the 28th day of I November, next, as a day of thanksgiving nnd prnyur, and invite the people throughout the land to cease upon that day from their ordinary occupations and in their several homos nnd places of worship to render thanks to God, the Ruler of Nntions. I towns and communities of Utah gather together and hold special .musical programs, including songs of thanksgiving, victory nnd home. Those gatherings, of course, arc dependent upon the in-I in-I fluenza situntlon, but it Is hoped and expected that the cause for bans upon gatherings of this sort will have been removed before November 28th. |
