Pleasant Grove High School Students Take Part In Alpine District Speech Festival America.ii Irork high school was host school to six other senior I high schools of Region III at the annual speech festival held Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. Over 200 students participated par-ticipated in the forensic and in-terpreive in-terpreive speech events. The Utah High School Activi- j ties Association sponsored the i forensic events which included : debate, oratory, extemporaneous speech and panel discussions. These were conducted on a competitive com-petitive basis. The interpretive speech events were participated in by the Alpine Al-pine District schools, and included includ-ed one-act plays, humorous readings, read-ings, dramatic readings and retold re-told stories. These were noncompetitive non-competitive but were rated superior, super-ior, excellent or good, and certificates certi-ficates of awards were given. The regular classes of the school were audiences for these various activities. Principal Jesse M. Walker of the American Fork high school and the Alpine District Dis-trict assistant superintendent, superinten-dent, Leo Hansen together with Luther Giddings, debate de-bate coach of the high school here and Beth Ovard, speech instructor, acted as general chairmen of the meet. Prior and Charles Johnson, Lehi; superior; su-perior; La Rae Gardner, American Fork, excellent; Jennie Fisher, Joan Whitehead White-head and Sydney Young Pleasant Grove, excellent; Joan Hardman, Pleasant Grove, good; Lincoln received one superior and one excellent ex-cellent rating. Finalists ' from the forensic groups will be selected to go to the state meet at the U. of U. later this month. Of the debate teams two from American Fork, one from Lehi, three from Provo high and an alternate team from E Y high were named to the state meet. Christensen, American Fork, and Robert Allred and Nadine Jones, Lehi, five rounds undefeated to form a three way tie. Panel discussions: Phyllis Cleghorn, American Fork first; Eva Tsalaky, Provo, second; Ralph Willet, Lincoln, Lin-coln, third. In intepretive speech events the following ratings were given: One-act plays: Lincoln, superior su-perior American Fork, good; Pleasant Grove, good. The Lincoln Lin-coln cast included: Dora Prest-wich, Prest-wich, Diane Dixon, Raquel Bennett. Ben-nett. Peggy Spencer, Donna Stol-worthy, Stol-worthy, Carol Watts, Carolyn Carter, Glenna Ivie, Lois Nielsen, Jeanine Dean, Maxine Harwood and Kay Beatty, Sharee'' Weeks was student director. The American Fork play "Special Guest," coached by Beth Ovard, was presented by Geral-dine Geral-dine Penrod. Sherman Christensen. Christen-sen. Arnold Larsen, Janice Chad-wick, Chad-wick, and Alan Walker. The cast of the Pleasant Grove play "The Man In the Bowler Hat", was Norman Homer, Bud Goff. Bruce Clark. Owen Richardson, Rich-ardson, Don Walker, Beverly Wright and Jerry Bradley. Mrs. Maud Jacobs was coach.
