Show Impressive Public Ceremonies Mark Dedication of Modern Pleasant Grove Civic Center Impressive ceremonies marked the dedication of the recently completed, com-pleted, civic building last Friday evening, following a tour of the structure. In honor of the occasion occa-sion the rooms had been decora ted by the local beautification committee com-mittee with baskets of roses, iris, mignonette, and peonies. In the Firemen's hall an exhibit of new and remodeled clothing made by the W P A adult education sewing class was shown, under the direction direc-tion of Mrs. Marcelle Hawkins, instructor. in-structor. The dedicatory program, which was arranged by George W. Larson, chairman of the library board, and by Duane Harper, chairman of city property, was presented to the throngs of citizens assembled on Main street, by means of the Max Larson sound system. Harold Woot-ton Woot-ton of the city council acted as announcer. Mayor V. N. West expressed appreciation ap-preciation to Former Mayor W. W. Lim, Lyean Johnson, and S. A. Kirk, under whose administration most of the planning and construction construc-tion of the building was accomplished, accom-plished, and of the W P A without whose labor the work could not have been done. He also invited the citizens to make the best use of the community center. Former Mayor Lyean Johnson recalled re-called the circumstances which led to the agitation for a new city hall. At a meeting of the city council one evening the city safe was found to have penetrated the old termite eaten floors of the old city hall, and had to be lifted out. The council then fixed up the center cen-ter room of the old library building build-ing and moved there temporarily, meantime planning ways to erect a new building. Mr. Johnson paid tribute to J. L. Harvey, the oldest living mayor, under un-der whose administration the original orig-inal city hall was constructed. He also told of the work of Ex-Mayor W. W. Lim and his council in working to formulate plans, which were completed during the administration admin-istration of Mayor Johnson, just as the Federal government withdrew the P W A financial support. During Dur-ing the Kirk administration the W P A project was approved, the work nearly finished, and finally completed com-pleted under the present council. State Administrator of W P A, Darrell Greenwell of Salt Lake City congratulated the city on the neat appearance of the civic center, cen-ter, explaining that such a condition condi-tion showed the character of the community. He then paid a compliment compli-ment to Irwin Jensen and 'his band for their concert. His address centered cen-tered on the thought that United States has been fortunate during the trying period of depression, to have had a work program under which structures have been constructed con-structed with labor that would otherwise have been wasted. He expressed regret that that vast army of construction will now have to be turned into an army of defense to meet the present world crisis. Duane Harper thanked all who assisted in any way with the planning plan-ning and construction of the building build-ing and made special mention of Mr. Josiah Kemp for his expert direction di-rection in the early stapes of the work. Mr. Harper invited all who had not yet visited the building to do so. 'There is a council chamber for (he city officials. offices for the ! recorder, and the marshal, a fire-I fire-I men's hall, kitchen, and eqnirment I room: a library, ami a intern ;;.til for those who don't care much for I the rest of the rooms." he ncVel. !
