Show KIWANIANSHEAR INTERESTING TALK . i - A very interesting talk and demonstration was given at the ehib luncheon last Thursday evening eve-ning by Chief Dispatcher A. P. Palm of the Salt Lake division of the Western Union. The subject of the speaker was " Our Time-saver, Time-saver, the Telegraph," and after the talk Mr. Palm gave a demon-sration demon-sration showing the new and j modern instrument which is being be-ing installed by his company forj the transmission of messages and which is destined to eliminate the "Code" system invented 52 years ago by Prof. Morse" and which has been in use since that time. The new instrument called the Simplex Writer is fitted with keys similar to a typewriter. The operator oper-ator "zones" and "tunes" his machine, ma-chine, then writes the message on n paper ribbon. At the same time the receiving machine prints the message on the ribbon at its destination. des-tination. The receiving operator pastes the ribbon on blank telegrams tele-grams in paragraphs! lines and sentences as rough typewritten. The Simplex Writer is being installed in-stalled in all dispatching offices just as fust as the manufacturers can turn thera out. In the future any efficient typist typ-ist may, with a little trainiug in the knowledge of the technique of the machine, send telegrams at the rate of sixty or seventy words per minute. Several messages may t e sent in different directions over ov-er the wire at the same time without with-out interference. The meeting which was well attended, at-tended, was a most interesting one and all present enjoyed Mr. 1 Palm's talk and demonstration ' very much.
