Show War Workers Pass By Due To Housing Shortage The acute shortage of dwelling units in the Utah defense area is creating a corresponding shortage of workers essential in the war industry, T. R. Maughan, acting state director of the U. S. employment employ-ment service, said Wednesday. Many defense workers, he said, are going right through here because be-cause they cannot find suitable places to live. Mr. Maughan said results of a survey conducted last March, indicated indi-cated 3200 additional defense workers would be needed for Utah jobs by January, 1493. Since the survey, he said, conditions point to an increase of several times that many. "Our primary purpose," Mr. Maughan said, "is to win the war, and in order to do that we must have the necessary defense workers. For that reason it is imperative that present housing conditions be remedied." A new survey to determine the amount of the probable Influx of war workers is under way now, he said. It is expected to be completed by the middle of August. |
