Show Beet Thinning Starts Stephen R. Boswell, county agricultural agri-cultural agent, said Friday that the annual job of thinning Utah county's coun-ty's sugar beet crop was started last week in fields in all sections of the county, with school children from 12 to 16 years of age providing the geater part of the labor. Boys and girls are responding to this patriotic task and a total of 1627 of them have registered to carry out the job. To assist them and the farmers needing help, local recruiting offices have been opened in communities throughout the county. The offices are located as follows: fol-lows: Orem city hall, Orlan Pyne, clerk; Pleasant Grove, Joseph Day residence; American Fork, city hall, Carl Bennett, Clerk; Lehi city hall, Leland Powell clerk. Wages are being paid the beet thinners in accordance with a labor schedule sent out from the department depart-ment of labor in Washington, D. C, and the government regulations on child labor are in force, Mr. Boswell pointed out. They provide that no child between 14 and 16 can work more than eight hours per day and , children under 14 years cannot work unless the child's parents own 40 per cent of the crop. An urgent appeal has been Issued Is-sued to the available school children chil-dren to participate in the program. pro-gram. Sugar beet acreage in the county totaling 7000 acres, is approximately 25 per cent greater than last year, Mr. Boswell said. Cold weather has retaarded the crop somewhat and necessitated some replanting, but with some sunshine in the near future the crop should help considerably consid-erably in the production of sugar, he said. |
