Show Calendar Revised Date Changed New Year's Day In 1582 the Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian in a proclamation proc-lamation issued by Pope Gregory XIII. This established January 1 ai New Year's Day. Our present calendar, known as the Gregorian calendar, Is based upon Pope Gregory's Greg-ory's revision of the Julian calendar and is more nearly in accord with the solar calendar the error being reduced to only one day in 3,323 years. Protestant states did not adopt the Gregorian calendar until the 18th century. It was not until the 20th century that Russia and others of i the Balkan states decided to do likewise. |
