Among such people is one who is outstanding outstand-ing and deserves a reviewing of his life at this time. Dr. Phil. M. Kelly Kel-ly was born of pioneer parents in American Fork, Utah, February 17., 1877. His parents were Wm. and Christina Kelly and he was the eighth child of a family of ten. After attending the grades here in American Amer-ican Fork he was graduated from the eighth grade under my father, Jos. B. Forbes. This graduation was the first graduation to be held with others of the county at Provo in 1893. He attended the B. Y. U. at Provo for three years taking out his teaching certificate, and taught school at Highland in 1897. The next three years he taught in the grades in American Fork. In October, Octo-ber, 1900, he accepted a three year missionary call to Germany. After his mission he visited Switzerland, Italy, France and England and returned re-turned in 1904 to resume his teaching teach-ing hi the American Fork schools. In 1905 he married Susan Groesbeck of Logan, Utah, who was teaching here in American Fork at the time. Five beautiful children blessed their home- two boys and three girls. . He attended the University of Utah :; Medical Sch :ol in 1906-7, and school 1 1 Ln Chicago, III. where he was grad-i grad-i uuterf In' 1909 with the degree of Dr. . of Medicine. Returning to American Fork he practiced medicine . and , surgery from 1909 until 1926. He then moved to St. Anthony, Idaho, where he has continued his practice ' of medicine and surgery. While he was in American Fork he was one' of the Sunday School Superintendency of the First ward and later a member of the Sunday School Stake Board. He was one of the seven presidents of Seventies in the local quorum and was president of the Civic Betterment League. He was appointed city and county physician phy-sician and was president of the Utah County Medical society. Always with his eyes open with concern for the betterment of a community, he purchased the land for the Carnegie Library and held it until arrangements could be made for the library committee to secure the necessary funds. He made an I extensive canvas to increase the local lo-cal tax one-half mill in order that the library might be maintained af-. af-. ter being built. For six years, dur- ing the arranging of details and the I securing of funds for the library, I he was president of the committee and Library Board. This wonderful building which is a credit to American Ameri-can Fork is truly a monument to Dr. Kelly who spent much of his time and money in order that it could be built. He was Bishop of the L. D. S. First ward in St. Anthony, Idaho, for ' three years and has served on the High Council of the Yellowstone |
