Show Seminary Graduates Largest Class In Years The fifteenth annual commencement commence-ment exercises of the American Fork Seminary were held Tuesday night in the Stake Tabernacle. Thirty-nine Thirty-nine boys and girls were awarded diplomas certifying to the fact that they had completed a three year course in religious education as outlined out-lined by the Board of Education of the L. D. S. church. Under the direction of E. Ray Gardner, principal of the American Fork Seminary, the following program pro-gram was carried out: Organ pre-dule, pre-dule, Miss Alice Parker; entry march of the graduates who marched march-ed down the center, aisles and took their places on the stand; violin solo, "Largo", Lillian Seastrand; invocation, invoca-tion, Lynn Nilsson; boys group quartette; Salutatory address, Dale Burgess; mixed chorus, "In The Garden" directed by Ora H. Chip-man; Chip-man; and student addresses, Jean Parker and Margaret Dunkley. The theme of Miss Parker's talk was that physical strength comes through spiritual growth. Miss Dunkley urged that we as Latter-day Latter-day Saints uphold the birthright of our forbearers and that through a knowledge of ones self improvement is made or "dominion over self builds true character". She felt that the knowledge gained in seminary helped help-ed the students to recognize good habits from evil. The graduates were presented by Mr. Gardner to President Clifford E. Young who awarded them their diplomas. Apostle Melvin J. Ballard delivered the address to the graduates. grad-uates. He said in part, that of all the churches who teach religious education, the L. D. S. church has taken the lead. The teachings that Seminary students acquire are not dogmas that will change as some have. Despite all of the changes in the scientific world of the past hundred years the L. D. S. church has not had to change any of its truths or fundamental teachings. People need "some standard of truth to measure other truths by" and these truths are learned by the student stu-dent in Seminary. Apostle Ballard gave several interesting examples of the fact that sooner or later time will bring out all truths and that "time is ever on the side of right and truth." Two new board members, Bishop Joseph H. Storrs and R. L. Ashby were presented by Mr. Gardner. These two men will fill the vacancies va-cancies on the board made by the recent death of James H. Clarke and the resignation of President Stephen L. Chipman. The closing number was a Ladies Trio, directed by Kenneth J. Bird. Benediction was offered by Lela Hansen. n |
