Show Review - Wednesday, Feb. 1, 1989 - Page 5 Time management expert opens office I k I you know a person who !Do to be like a master juggler -- they manage with equal effective- - ness the many aspects of their personal life; they accomplish the , extraordinary, and yet their life is serene and tranquil? I "There are basically three time I management behaviors which are g and cause us stress and counter-productivit- All of us, to some degree, exhibit some of M these patterns," explains Todd L. t'l Pearson, a time management ex-- 1 pert. Pearson is founder and presi-dent of Time Masters, a human resource training firm with head-quarters now in Pleasant Grove. Todd has opened his business at 776 S. 980 East. Information about ed their products, seminars or about speaking engagements may be made by calling 785-110- Todd has a background in six different professions. He is a native Richfield and pursued under-graduate work at Snow College, Southern Utah State, Utah Valley at; Community College and Brigham 3oc: Young University in psychology, education, and communications. U: His graduate work at the Uni-versity of Utah was focused in clini-ot- e cal social work and counseling psychology. His professional exp-edience has been that of mental rst health specialist in three Utah Mental Health Centers, he has NOjbeen an instructor with the LDS Church Educational System, he tjy.was of Pearson ira United, a large holding company. Hehas alsobeen a salesman and has practiced law in the state of Utah. Combininghis skills and experi-ences he has qualified as a manage-ment consultant and has worked with several management consult-ing firms before founding his own human resource training company, Time Masters. In discussing the three time management behaviors which are g, Todd continued, "First, we have the case of people who will not take charge of their lives because it is easier to live in the comfort zone of avoidance, they sacrifice their own potential just to avoid growth-buildin- g challenges and responsibilities which may cause some initial discomfort and mental anxiety. We are not just talking about abnormal people here. For everyone, all change will incur some associated anxiety in the short term." He explains that people with this time management problem will avoid some anxiety, but at the same time will set for themselves a trap they are manipulated and controlled by the daily events which arise and also by the expec-tations of other people. Thus they end up in the reactive mode. "Learning to be proactive, or in control, rather than being reactive to situations is common sense but is not common practice," he said. By contrast, the other side of the coin reveals a much different di-lemma, overplanning or perfec-tionism. "Too much detail can be he added. The master of time control, he says, will strike a balance between overplan- - Todd Pearson ning and the way the world is. A third time management prob-lem that Pearson discusses is about people who seem to be busy, but are really not very productive. He points out that the busy person is seldom effective for their energy is consumed by the "seem-ingly urgenfrather than the"actu-all- y important." Again, these people are in the reactive mode, he noted. Unfortu-nately, we often let the things that matter most be at the mercy of those which matter least. The key to this problem is to align our per-formance with our priorities, he concluded. Local students earn honors at SUSC Paul D. Phelon, a physical edu-cation major; Cherylnn Johnson, J an accounting major; and Vicki L. Walker, an elementary education major, all students at Southern Utah State College, were among 297 students who earned honor roll status fall quarter. To be named to the honor roll, a student must be enrolled fulltime, taking 15 or more credit hours, and earn a quarterly grade point aver-age of 3.60 or above.
