CompuerJ3alacir Review - Wednesday, December 13, 1989 - Page 12 Former PI. Grove resident highlighted Ruth Hassenfritz' daughter, Ruth, who now lives in Rhinelan-der- , Wise, was recently spotlighted with her family in the local news-paper there. Ruth and her husband, Tom Nelson, and their two children moved to Rhinelander from Jackson, Mich. Tom is land manager and legal counsel for the eastern district of Noranda Exploration. Noranda has two other districts nationally, one in Reno, Nev., and one in Denver, Colo. The eastern district is made up of states basically east of Kan-sas. Ruth was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. but grew up in Pleasant Grove. She graduated from Pleasant Grove High School. She attended the University of Utah and majored in management. She and Tom met through a scuba diving class. Tom was born in Chicago but grew up in Salt Lake City. He gradu-ated from school there and joined the Air Force in 1965. For four years he wrote software programs at Hill Air Force Base. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in managementfrom thelawschool at the University of Utah. He earned his law degree at the U, also. Tom noted that Wisconsin is a lot like Utah, but without the mountains. "Utah is warmer than Wisconsin, but there is a lot of hunting and fishing," he said. While in Utah Ruth enjoyed sailing. "There you can sail all year round as the Great Salt Lake never freezes," she added. "And there's great skiing," she explained. Ruth recounted that when they lived in Utah they owned a home that was once a part of a farm owned by Mormon Church leader Brigham Young. She noted that Young had en-couraged homesteading of hundreds of acres. The abstract for their home goes back to the 1870's. He paid $500 for the 40 acres the house was later built on, she explained. The land had 36 inches of topsoil. Over the years Tom has worked for the Department of the Interior, representing the National Parks Service in legal suits, and has spe-cialized in mineral law for private firms and corporations. In his Rhinelander position, Tom writes agreements, negotiates deals and joint ventures and secures land titles. His job takes him through-out the Midwest, Southeast and East. The couple's children are Tom, Jr., 12, and Chuck, 11. Family hobbies including sail-ing, cross-countr- y and downhill skiing, and being cat lovers. Ruth said Friday night is special, re-ferred to as Family Fun Night, when the family goes out to eat and spends time together. Tom said the family has no time for television. He said they haven't owned a TV for 20 years. In the future, they'd like to at lakes in the area where they nuv. me. Kulh saiu alie a nie to catch a musky. Ruth enjoys sewing, playing racquetball, reading, playing bridge and "scraping wallpaper." She mentioned the latter because they are redoing their home. She noted that she would like to learn ice skating. In Jackson, Ruth was president ofthe and said she would like to get in-volved in Rhinelander newcomer activities. Tom enjoys writing and has had professional papers published but not his short stories. He did send in one of Ruth's one-line- to the "Readers Digest" and it was pub-lished. It was, "She's not fat, just a little porculent." In Jackson, Mich., Tom wrote humorous articles for the local newspaper. In the future he would like to travel more. Tom, Jr., r seventh grader, en-joys playing basketball and is learn-ing to shoot, as is Chuck, a fifth grader. Tom likes to read and would like to be a doctor when he grows up. Both boys enjoy playing Nin-tendo. Both are also good students in school. Ruth's mother, Ruth Hassen- - fritz, is director of the Pleasant Grove Senior Citizens and is active in many civic organizations and committees. Ruth plans to visit her daughter in Wisconsin for the Christmas holidays this year.
