These handicapped people do not have personal guardians and are from theLindon Care and Training Center in Lindon, Lakecrest Care Center in Orem and Hidden Hol-low in South Orem. Ann Clyde, past president of the Association for Retarded Citizens, and Martha Craghead, secretary of the group, have spent two weeks getting the gifts together. They asked each of the 38 people what they wanted for Christmas and have done their best to get all the things as desired. The funds from the ARC did not quite cover all the bases so they received help from several other groups. Ann said that ZCMI do-nated women's charity coats, Dur-fe- e Cleaners cleaned all the coats, Millers Ski donated coats, two dentists donated toothbrushes, and Delta Airlines gave playing cards. Members of the Pleasant Grove High School Key Club joined Ann, Martha and other volunteers in wrapping the gifts one afternoon at the Pleasant Grove Eleventh Ward building. The gifts, along with cookies and fruit, willbe taken to therecipients on Christmas Eve. The cookies and fruit have been donated, also. Ann said that the ARC has done a similar project every year but there were more gifts this year than before. Take advantage of reading the food labels when buying foods for your low fat, low cholesterol life-style. Nutritional labeling is required on any food for which a nutritional claim is made. You can calculate the percent of fat calories in an item by: 1. Find the calories. 2. Look at the fat grams. 3. Add 0 4. Divide by the number of calories. Cheddar cheese could read 90 calories per serving with 7 fat grams, divide by the number of calories, it is 78 percent fat. Any food containing 50 percent or more of its calories as fat is a high fat food. Try to limit these foods. If calculating the percentage of fat calories is confusing use this formula. If the total calories per serving is 50, the amount of fat should not be more than 1 gram or 2 grams per 100 calories. If a product is higher in fat, you look for a different brand, change the menu, use the product in small amounts or only on special occa-sions. Ingredients are listed in order from the m ost to the least predom by weight. In comparing two products, d beans number 1 may say cooked beans, water, salt, garlic and coco-nut or soybean oil. Number 2 may say cooked beans, water, lard, salt. Even though product number 1 may contain coconut oil, it is the last ingredient. This means there is less fat than salt or garlic in the beans, making it low in fat and number 1 would be the best choice. Take a look al your grocery carl. Are you buying a lot ofjunk food or unplanned items? Or is your cart usually abundant with fruits, vege-tables, grains, cereals, legumes and low fat dairy products. If you are using items over 30 percent fat, you can dilute the fat with bread, potatoes or pastas. Beans are an excellent product to have in your diet to lower you cholesterol level. A tasty bean salad was served at our cholesterol class. Try it! 3 cans beans 16 oz. kidney, pinto, black or garbanzo (any combina-- "tion. , y,5 1 to 1-- C sliced celery 1 Medium tomato 12 C. diced red onion r 12 to 23 C. picante sauce t 14 C. Italian dressing tsp. Dijon-styl- e mustard r Combine beans, celery, tomato and onion in medium bowl. Com-bine picante sauce, dressing and mustard; mix well. Pour over vege-tables. Toss lightly, cover and chill. Stir in cilantro just before serving. Makes six to eight servings, about 6 cups salad. PGHS opens Garden Society Chapter M. There is now an official chapter of the Pleasant Grove High School Garden Society. The club is com-prised of students from Mrs. Rose- - mary Lindberg's classes. Tom Lewis is the President, Mitch Davis is the vice president. Nichole Ahlstrom is the secretary and Heather Hatch is the treasurer. Lizz Coons was made the publicity chairman and Cassie Bone will take care of the historian's duties. Amy Hardinger is the program chair-man and Jennifer Hardinger is the yearbook chairman. Ester Sterling is the Arbor Day chairman and Megan Johnson will take care of the Garden Show duties. The advisor for the club is Rose-mary Lindberg. The Community Advisor is Joan Lewis. The club will have guest speak-ers and presentations. They will discuss the care of plants, birds and conservation. They will work on conservation and landscaping as a project for the school. Mrs. Lindberg invites anyone who would like to contribute to the club to contact her at the school. She said the newly formed club would also appreciate suggestions on guest speakers and needed proj-ects. A dream pie for kids Pecan Pie 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 cup corn syrup 1 cup sugar 2 tbsp. margarine, melted I tsp. vanilla I cups pecan halves 1 unbaked 9" pie shell In large bowl stir first 5 ingrec ents until well blended. Stir in pecans. Pour into pie shell. Bake in 350 oven 50 to 55 minutes or until knife inserted half way between center and edge comes out clean. Cool.
