Show Christmas is love in action By KALYN SECRETAN Christmas is love in action. The whole month of December is a holiday. holi-day. Christmas is not only one day but a season of loving and caring. As we get involved with all the preparations we oftentimes want to do more and more. I remember as a Child preparations prepara-tions were made just before Christmas. Christ-mas. The tree may be up a couple of days before Christmas and presents pres-ents placed under the tree on Christmas Christ-mas Eve. But as a teenager the tree was up at least a week before Christmas Christ-mas and presents increased in value and number. Now the tree may be up for the whole month of December and the month is full of Christmas pro grams, parties and sometimes the shopping seems endless. It is fun, but at times, overwhelming. The Christmas comparison was brought strongly to my mind a few years ago when the Chipman Storey in American Fork sold everything in the store including some old record books. Two books were bought by a woman who found a letter written by a Mrs. Cook of Cedar Fort. She took this letter to a relative of'mine whose last name was Cook, to see if they knew of her. It was his grandmother grand-mother and also my grandmother and they shared copies of the letter with the family. The letter, dated December 19, 1934, was read at a family party a few years ago and I will share it with you. To Chipman Mercantile - Dear Sire, Would you please send me the following by first chance as I can't come on account of illness. I have Vplorisy and wouldn't dare come unless the weather was settled. Also, I would send the money over by the next com ingTuesday as Mrs. Chipman didn't get our work cards out sooner. Two pair of slippers (boys size 6-12 black) as they ear wear the same size and over shoes for same. I wanted these for their Christmas, also they need them on the school bus. Alight piece of print for a house dress for Mother (4 yds.) 1 pair men's garters, 1 pair childs mercerized socks for girls, 1 bottle brown shoe dye, 1 bottle black shoe dressing, 1 small can cream paint, 1 small can blue or green paint, 1 card of dark bobby pins, 3 lbs. mixed nuts and 4 lbs. mixed candy. Will see you just as soon as I can. Respectfully, Nellie A. Cook Wouldn't have asked only this means our Christmas. This letter was written by a widow with 10 children. She took in sewing for Chipman's Store. As I think of the many gifts we receive I wonder if we appreciate our gifts as much as by Grandmother's family did 54 years ago. Times have changed, Christmas has too, but it will always be a time for loving and giving. |
