The 92nd version of the Straw-jyDays Straw-jyDays parade featured about ntries and was quite different Sour traditional parade. There was no marching bands, the Quarter Quar-ter Horse Show Association led the parade, circus performers were featured with the circus in town and the canine crusader educated dogs were there. The local Wildlife offices prepared a float from an antique fish transport truck, with a viewing window, along with a modern fish transport truck. , The carnival did not compare with ours at al as it featured only rides for little ones minus the merry-go-round. I was thankful for our Strawberry Days carnival located in a nice shady park with lots of grass where you could walk through leisurely, and enjoy watching the kids ride and mingle among friends and neighbors. It was surprising to see free strawberries and ice cream advertised. adver-tised. I discovered the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club distributed strawberries and ice cream at Strawberry Straw-berry Park following the parade. A favorite event for kids is the annual pet fashion show. Children dress their pets in costumes. Pets of all shapes and sizes are seen, everything from cats and dogs to turtles and mice turn out for the fashion gala. The 12th annual Strawberry Shortcake race was held on Fathers Fa-thers Day. The 5K winner received $50 and the 10K winner received $100. Runners received T-shirts and were treated to fruit, bagels and beer. It was tagged two years ago by the Runners Magazine as one of the top five summer road races in the country. A wheelchair division was also held. The Strawberry Days Queen Pageant was held on Monday as part of the celebration with an evening gown exhibition. It lasted less than an hour and the winner was not announced until later during the week. In an effort to allow more girls in the Strawberry Days pageant, the queen chosen was not Miss Glenwood Springs associated with the Miss Colorado pageant. They chose to eliminate the talent and swimsuit segment. It was a change with former queens also serving as Miss Glenwood Glen-wood Springs. Now the representative represen-tative to Miss Colorado will be selected se-lected in the fall. Queens were selected on personality, per-sonality, appearance and poise. The Queen won a $500 shopping spree, $200 for the first runner-up and $100 for the second runner up. The rodeo was extended this year to three days, with previous rodeos featuring two days of competition. Two night performances were held-on held-on Friday and Saturday night with a matinee performance on Sunday afternoon. One of the largest rodeos of the summer, 250 cowboys were expected to compete with about one third coming from the local area. The goal for many is to qualify for the Colorado State Rodeo Association finals. Glenwood Springs is now home to my daughter and son-in-law where they operate a restaurant. It is a tourist town and boasts the world's largest outdoor mineral water swimming pool, open year round. It is a pretty place to visit and it was interesting to arrive on the final Strawberry Days and watch another community carry on a long standing tradition. |
