Show Biologist lists best fishing methods for summer days when water's warm By GLENN DAVIS, Fisheries Biologist What are some of the secrets to fishing during the hot summer? This is a question many anglers do not consider before going out to fish their favorite lakes, reservoirs and streams. During the summer months some people prefer to fish in higher elevation waters. This is because these waters are not influenced as much by high air temperatures. Some excellent waters for fishing are found in the Uinta and Manti mountains and small walk-in streams located throughout the state. Experienced anglers know that fishing slows down on low and medium elevation waters so they alter their techniques. One way is to fish early or late in the day when temperatures are cooler and the sun is not so bright. Boat anglers find it helpful to troll in deeper, cooler waters. This is done by using weighted line. There are also techniques to consider when using bait. Bait dunkers should look to get the bait into the cooler layers, and in some waters it is essential to float the bait up and out of the weeds. There are special baits and rigs for this purpose, and many anglers use . marshmallows, bobbers, or styrofoam. Another thing to consider con-sider is that many of our productive reservoirs stratify during the summer and there is no dissolved oxygen in the lower strata. Also some of these waters are too warm for trout in the uDoer strata M this condition exists anglers ma! fish at mid depth which is knwv the thermocline to be eflecfe Examples of waters where h condition exists include Scofc Strawberry and Panguitch ui reservoirs. Another thing some anglers Jos recognize is that fly fishing cam good during the middle of the 4. David Thomas, a longtime ce servation officer and a skilled! fisherman would often say the Is time to fish is from 10 a.m. toipr. Dave would use only two flies a his favorite stream were the le Fork Duchesne, Wild State and Current Creek. |
