Show I Training School ij lifts quarantine p The quarantine order in effect at the Utah State Training School since early in July was lifted Friday, according to Superintendent Jeremiah H. Dandoy. The residents had been quarantined quaran-tined in their "families" in the various buildings on campus since early in July when several came 7 down with hemolytic uremic syndrome syn-drome (HUS), a rare bacterial disease. The disease also struck at a Salt Lake County group home. Two residents of the training : J school and two at the Salt Lake group home died from the disease. ; I Several others were hospitalized. J "We're"1 keeping- W - "fingers--ji crossed but the disease seems to i have run its course," Dandoy said I Monday in a telephone interview. -, He said no new cases of the disease have been reported since July 15. The last reported fatality, a I I training school resident, was July i n' I ! "There were others with the E-coli I j bacteria that didn't develop HUS," ' Dandoy said. About five "families" -- groups of : about eight residents who reside in a family unit -- are still in quarantine, he said, but the majority of the residents are going about their regular programming. "School is back in session, the Industrial Center is back in operation, our day programs are running again," Dandoy stated. He praised both professional and direct care staff for having gone the extra mile during the crisis. "There was a lot of tension build up with both the clients and the staff because they couldn't leave their families, couldn't take part in regular activities or go anywhere (during the isolation period). The staff really have gone the extra mile during this time to keep things on an ' even keel. "Without a good staff nothing would have been done," Dandoy said, noting that during the quarantine regular volunteers such as Foster Grandparents were not allowed on the hill to help out. He said some of the professional staff saw areas where problems could develop and came in to help out. "Everyone pitched in to help. I can't praise them enough," he said. |
