Anything thai deserves doing, deserves doing n and that is certainly the way to concert turned out. As chairman of the Ptei Grove Arts Council, I add, "M you" for adding a little more culte to our community. By MARCELLA WALKER The modern and ballroom dance students at Pleasant Grove High School performed one of the best, concerts they have ever done last weekend during the annual Orchesis concert featuring "Galactica Suite". Elaine Hansen, dance instructor at the high school, said that she got the idea last year for "Galactica Suite" after attending an ice skating show at the Salt Palace. The skaters danced to Gustav Hoist's "Planets" and as she watched them she thought, "Why not dance to the planets?" Then after the Shuttle disaster, she was again spurred by the subject and that is how "Galactica Suite" came to be born. She said she has enjoyed this project more than any other and it is easy to see why. A teacher or choreographer must be able to see in the mind's eye the finished product with the costuming, lighting and special effects as they make up the dances. Not only were the dances performed per-formed very well, but the music was the most appropriate I have ever seen. The lighting created the mood in tandem with the music. Dances were performed in tribute to the Milky Way, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Orchesis, the advanced dancers and the intermediate dancers par ticipated. Probably the most beautiful one was Venus which featured Shalaine Grimshaw, Dale Grimshaw and Steve Livingston. In this dance, Venus emerges from a sea shell like the Goddess Venus of old. The music and the choreography was spectacular spec-tacular in this. Another favorite was Saturn with its three brilliant rings of hope, peace and goodwill. Performed in two segments and then merged together, this dance added a special touch through the use of the silver rings. Elaine herself performed in Uranus, a very mystical dance, in which the use of special effects added to the mood created through lighting and music. The first half of the program, prior to the tribute to the planets, was dedicated to the swing era of the 1930's through the 1950's. Orchesis did a number in this section which was called "Bop Till You Drop". The catchy rhythm of this dance had everyone's toe tapping before it was over. Just before intermission was the variety section. One of the highlights of this group included "If I Should Love Again", a ballroom dance number which is very touching and beautiful to look at. These dancers were Chris Drake and Laura Worthington. |
