Show Citizen, Press, Review -- Wed., Feb. 4, liWT-Pag- e l.l He had to keep reminding himself that Nellie was an enemy who would turn him in, testify against li him in court, and slander him in published articles if she could. Ben Itt; was annoyed at his reaction to her c being close to him. He was too aware of her breathing, the smoothness of her skin, the curve of H her hip, the swell of her breasts S( under her shirt. Though she was an it enemy, everything about her fascinated him. He couldn't un-f-derstand how a woman on her knees tte scraping dirt out of a hole could look 0 j so good to him . He wished she would go back in the cabin, but was glad when she didn't. nfc When Madge and George stepped otf into the hole to loosen another layer er j of soil, Ben and Nellie climbed out and waited. Still, no words passed between them. Flat Nose George and Madged chatted back and forth like they were lifetime friends. After having her b aby, Madge had regained her strength quickly and had b egun to spend more and more time outside with George, sometimes helping with the chores, loj other times merely strolling along elij the stream bed or just lounging around the tepee fire. Madge and George had become fast friends, id More and more, it was George who was holding and playing with her baby. When the hole was about five feet t deep, Ben and George returned to eif the cabin to get the body and the other women. Grace was wrapped in a clean gray blanket. Her body felt somewhat lighter to Ben. Ijji After setting the body beside the dhole, Ben and George climbed in, IFl then carefully lowered Grace to her final resting place. Nellie was holding a handkerchief to her face, unsuccessfully trying to control her emotions. Stella was fighting back tears too. Priscilla and Madge appeared calm and controlled. When Ben and George crawled out of the hole, everyone gathered close in a tight circle around the grave, looking down at the gray blanket. "Since we don't have a preacher," Ben began, without looking up, "I think it would be appropriate if each of us said a few words before we say a prayer and cover her up. If someone is ready to speak, go ahead." There was silence for a few moments. Priscilla was the first to speak. "Grace Woolley lived and died," she began in a steady voice, "for a sacred sisterhood of women who uphold each other and their husbands, who know their children are not born in sin. I hope somehow her death was not in vain, that thousands and thousands more will be able to live the principle of celestial marriage. I pray for the day when young women throughout Zion will not have to watch in dismay as all the men worth marrying are taken, one at a time, forcing those poor leftover girls to settle for unworthy pigs. I pray for a day when the best men are free to marry all the best women, as many as may be available, leaving the pigs to root with the whores. Then Grace Woolley will not have died in vain."
