Show mm , , Pony League has successful year ByPAULSCHOONOVER aeie tore is Pleasant Grove? That questioned used to be asked almost anywhere you would go. But now, Pleasant Grove is known far and Ml ide. j j One reason for its recognition is G6Q jis Recreation Program. Bill j Hoglund, our director, has 5 3(1 dedicated the last 18 years to put us r ! m the map. His interest in the ' 'I- youth, adult and Senior Citizen programs is unmatched in the If United States. Thanks Bill, for taring for our community of Pleasant Grove qts A good example of Pleasant Drove being recognized took place last week in Pocatello, Idaho. The Pony League All-Stars traveled to Chubbuck, Idaho to play in the Northwest Pony League Regionals. Hong with our local boys were 1 learns from Washington, Idaho and 23 Colorado. Many people might think 2 little." ..Pleasant Grove .wouldn't,, have a chance. But these skeptics rere soon quieted as P.G. defeated Chubbuck, Idaho 7 to 4. Chubbuck ti was the host team and had many fans cheering for them. But Pleasant Grove had their own dedicated fans. No one who was there will ever forget those fans chanting "Utah," "Utah," "Utah," whenever our boys needed a lift. Game two was scheduled the next day against Colorado's State champs from Aurora, Colorado. About an hour before game time a huge rain storm dropped an inch of rain in less than an hour. The grounds crew worked all night to prepare the fields for the next day. Game time was noon. Two hours later, Pleasant Grove had defeated the Colorado State Champs 8 to 3. Now there were two undefeated teams left: Washington - Seattle and good old Pleasant Grove. Game three was one that will never be forgotten. Trailing 12 to 4 going into the seventh inning, Pleasant Grove staged an unbelievable un-believable comeback. A three-run home run by Eric Johnson and a two-run homerun by Danny Schoonover made the score 12 to 10. This score held up as two Pleasant Grove baserunners were thrown out at the plate. This comeback let everyone know that Pleasant Grove players have "guts." They never give up. The final game was against a good Pocatello team. The pitching on both teams was excellent. Our defense was great, but our bats just never did get going. The final score was 4 to 0 for Pocatello. This same Pocatello team went on to defeat Washington-Seattle in two straight games the next day. They will now represent the Northwest in California next week. A special thanks to the players, parents, fans, coaches, and Bill Hoglund for their help and support. The team consisted of 12 players: Glen Montgomery, Danny Turner, Cole Kelley, Danny Schoonover, Darek Robinson, Nick Dorick, Eric Johnsen, Jim Clark, Danny Hansgen, Han-sgen, B.J. McAllister, Donnell Hooleyand Shane Smith. They were ' coached by Paul Schoonover and Danny Smith. |
